The Old Vic — 2014

I worked with The Old Vic, one of Britain’s best-known theatres, for 12 years. Initially in a freelance capacity on a range of work during Kevin Stacey’s tenure, predominantly working on Old Vic New Voices talent, education and community projects, their fundraising and talent showcase events The 24 Hour Plays, as well as development event and press night invitations.

When the design team was brought in house, I was graphic designer under the head of design, assisting art direction on production photo shoots and leading implementation and planning of online artwork, email newsletter templates and a range of work for other departments. I was also part of the branding review we undertook with Rose Design, which culminated in a redrawn family of fonts by Colophon and redrawn crest marks by Chris Mitchell.

The new crests were commissioned to work on both dark and light backgrounds, whilst retaining the correct areas of highlights and shadows (the previous royal crest was only drawn to appear on light backgrounds). A small use version of each crest was also created to remain legible at smaller artwork sizes in print and online.

Using the redrawn typefaces by Colophon, I created a simplified logotype for Old Vic New Voices so it would not be repetitious alongside The Old Vic crest.

In house, we created a full suite of templates which could be adapted easily for the more timely production of work as well as building a consistency of brand.

These included show programmes, marketing print and advertising, project evaluation documents, teaching resources, funding proposals and membership leaflets. I led on educational, development print templates as well as creating a range of online formats.

Taking inspiration from architectural details of the Grade II* listed building – both external brickwork and within the auditorium — I created patterns which were used in a range of applications.
